The study of English, both the written word and the spoken word, is integral to our work in the English Department at Goffs School. We aim to achieve proficiency through a range of activities. The Department teaches the skills required to analyse all forms of literature, encouraging the students to pay close attention to the words and phrases used by writers, conducting word-level analysis. 


The following pages will give you precise details as to what we cover at each Key Stage, as well as provide you with links to documents that have been created to include details as to how you can support your child's learning, in English.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

What Will I Learn?
How to extend and improve my writing, through a variety of means. Introduction to Shakespeare: a taste of his plays! You will also read a play, a novel and learn about the English language.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Written work, reading projects, formal essays and speaking and listening activities.
What Different Types of Activities Will I Do Over Time to Help Me Learn?
Group work, individual work, presentations, ICT, desk pen work, drama, writing and reading.
How Will This Help Me to Progress to the Next Year or Key Stage?
These activities will provide a foundation for future years while progressing skills developed at KS2. For example, how to write essays, interpret texts and select information. You will also start to become GCSE ready.

Year 8

What Will I Learn?
More in depth Shakespeare analysis, detailed study of poetic form and genre, analysis of media and non-fiction texts, contextualised study of a novel, Children's Book Project.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Written work, reading projects, formal essays and speaking and listening activities.
What Different Types of Activities Will I Do Over Time to Help Me Learn?
Group work, individual work, presentations, ICT, desk pen work, drama, digital camera work, flip camera work, writing, reading.
How Will This Help Me to Progress to the Next Year or Key Stage?

The 'basics' of writing should now be in place. We will now help you to develop and craft your writing to make it more sophisticated. Reading projects help to encourage a wide variety of genres and styles. Spoken presentations will develop your confidence in preparation for Spoken Language at GCSE.

Year 9

What Will I Learn?
We begin preparation for GCSE via a bridging year that will make you GCSE ready. This will include a detailed study of a modern play, a detailed study of a 19th century novel, sophisticated understanding of poetry, 19th, 20th and 21st century non-fiction texts as well as writing for different audiences and purposes.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Written work, reading projects, formal essays in the style of GCSE exams and speaking and listening activities.
What Different Types of Activities Will I Do Over Time to Help Me Learn?
Group work, individual work, presentations, ICT, desk pen work, drama, digital camera work, flip camera work, writing, reading, timed essays.
How Will This Help Me to Progress to the Next Year or Key Stage?
We start preparing you for GCSE by teaching 'taster units' which will be studied in year 10. We make sure you are equipped with the skills you need for GCSE.

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 / GCSE English Language and English Literature

KS4 Personalised Learning Checklist.

Our Key Stage 4 students follow the AQA English Language and Literature course. All our students study a combined course of English Language and English Literature: this enables them to achieve two GCSEs in English.

The Literature course is designed to foster a love of reading and to develop analytical and evaluative skills. The course is assessed by final examination and students are carefully prepared through effective teaching and monitoring of pupil progress.

We study a range of interesting set texts, including: “Macbeth”, “A Christmas Carol”, “An Inspector Calls”, and “Conflict Poetry”.

The Language course will enable students of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st century time periods as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures. The course is assessed by final examination which test pupils on their reading and writing skills of both fiction and non-fiction texts.

Year 12

How Will I Be Assessed?

  • Through two exams at the end of the academic year.
  • Peer assessment to help develop understanding of assessment criteria.
  • In Year 12, a piece of homework will be set at the end of each lesson.
  • You will be expected to complete independent research work.

 

What Different Types of Activities Will I Do Over Time to Help Me Learn?

  • Essay writing skills.
  • Analytical and comparative skills.
  • How to read a text and explore meanings.
  • Using ICT e.g. digital cameras to enhance understanding of texts.
  • Lots of collaborative work to challenge and develop thinking.

English Literature A Level Specification

What Will I Learn?

  • Prepare for Literature exam.
  • Compare novels ie. ‘The Great Gatbsy’ and the 'The Grapes of Wrath'
  • Explore poetry ie. Christina Rossetti
  • Explore drama ie. ‘A Doll’s House’.
  • How to write an analytical, comparative essay.

How Will I Be Assessed?

  • Through two pieces of coursework that are no more than 3,000 words and two two and a half hour exams.
  • Teacher assessment moderated by exam board.
  • Peer assessment to help develop understanding of assessment criteria.
  • In Year 13, a piece of homework will be set at the end of each lesson.
  • As part of Flipped Learning, you will be expected to complete independent research and follow-up work.

What Different Types of Activities Will I Do Over Time to Help Me Learn?

  • Essay writing skills that are analytical and comparative.
  • How to read a text and explore meanings.
  • Lots of collaborative (paired and group work) to challenge and develop thinking.
  • Student-led presentations.
