KS4: BTEC Tech award in Child Development

The early years sector focuses on the learning, development and care of children in the UK, there were approximately 1.7 million Ofsted registered childcare places for children offered by many different types of early years settings in England in 2019, ranging from childminders and nannies to nurseries, crèches and preschools. Knowledge of child development is important in a variety of occupations outside of childcare and teaching, for example, in healthcare roles such as paediatricians, psychologists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists.

KS5: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Children’s Play, Learning and Development

This qualification will inspire and enthuse students to consider a career in early years, or related sectors, where knowledge of child development is relevant. It will give Students the opportunity to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of, and develop skills in, the early years sector, for example, of child development and using play to promote child development and will support progression to a more specialised level 3 vocational or academic course, such as in early years, health and social care or psychology, or an apprenticeship. It will give students the potential opportunity, in due course, to enter employment.

The skills students will learn are:

  • cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology
  • intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation
  • interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.
